In our previous Episode i spoke on slavery and how it was abolished in the year 1830. Although Brazil was the last country to abolish its participation in the transatlantic slave trade, in 1880. However girl child slavery still remains a big issue around the world.
MODERN DAY GIRL CHILD SLAVERY
Its also referred to as Contemporary Slavery or Human Trafficking.Modern day girl child slavery is an institution of slavery that continue to exist in the present day. There's is an estimate of 20.9million people trapped in some form of slavery today in which girl child slavery is more. The contemporary takes many forms;
EARLY AND FORCED MARRIAGE
Its the marriage or union in which one or both parties are below the age of 18 years. Despite been prohibited by international law, millions of young girls under the age of 18 are still been affected. This act denies our young girls right in making vital decisions such as their well-being,sexual health, it makes them have little or no education,having low prospect about life leading to abuse,I'll health, Risk in violence and early death.
Early and forced marriage can be an attractive investment because the slave owner only needs to pay for substance and enforcement. About 15million girls marries before the age of 18 each year. This is equivalent to one in every two(2) seconds. Therefore, digging up the root cause of girl child marriage help us to replant the future for millions of girls around the world and acting now will prevent more than 140 million of girls from becoming brides in 3years times.
REASON FOR EARLY AND FORCED MARRIAGE
It happens because there is a belief system that says girls and women are some how inferior to boys and men. Its rooted in the following;
GENDER INEQUALITY AND BELIEF
Most community practice girl child marriage because girls are not valued as much as the boys.They are seen as burden and worthless in the family, so marrying them out at that very young age release economic hardship, stress and burden.
FAMILY HONOUR
Most parents feels marrying their daughters out at that very age to protect and guide their daughters sex life and virginity in other to protect their family honour because girls who have relationships and mistakenly gets pregnant outside marriage has brought shame and dishonour upon their families. How the girl child dresses,who should be allowed to see her to marry becomes the family priority by so doing, they are choosing who to marry and her choice of who to marry is neglected.
POVERTY
Giving a daughter out in marriage allows parents to reduce family expenses by ensuring they have one less person to feed cloths and educate. it's also away of debt payment, settle social economic and political alliances, Manage disputes why in other communities where doweries are paid in large amount is often a good welcome income for poor families.
INSECURITY
This leads most families into giving their daughter out at a very young age because they feels its for the most especially in areas where girls harassment and physical or social assault are of high risk but this a good reason why we should give out our girl child in marriage.
CULTURE AND TRADITIONS
Girl child marriage is traditional practiced in most communities around the world simply because it has been happening from generation to generation. Some communities believes that when a girl child starts menstrauting they are now women ready for marriage in their eyes.other traditional harmful practices can be seen in southern Ethiopia where female genital mutilation or cutting is considered as the rite of passage to womanhood and you what, this traditional practices often go unquestioned because they have being part of the community's life and identity for a very long time that's why Graca Machel, widow of Nelson Mandela, says traditions are made by people and people can unmake them.
